Just when you thought you had a handle on food that should be avoided, we have a list of worst foods for trans fat for you to look over.
Trans fat can make food taste good and last longer on grocery-store shelves, but it’s hazardous for your heart. We reward ourselves for good food behavior with a treat. However, if you’re over 50, you need to watch your diet to enjoy a healthy life with family and friends.
Trans fats raise your bad cholesterol just like saturated fats, but they also increase inflammation and lower the good cholesterol that protects us against heart disease.
The good news is that many manufacturers and fast-food chains have removed or reduced this type of fat in their products. That means Americans now consume 80% fewer trans fats than they did a decade ago, says Joy Dubost, PhD, RD, a spokesperson with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Here’s the list of the worst foods for trans fat to avoid:
French Fries & fried or battered foods – Pie & piecrust – Margarine sticks & shortening – Cake mixes & frostings – Pancakes & waffles – Fried chicken – Ice cream & nondairy creamers – Microwave popcorn – Ground beef (except for grass-fed beef) – Cookies, biscuits, sweet rolls & crackers – Breakfast sandwiches – Frozen or creamy beverages – Meat sticks & canned chili – Frozen dinners – Asian crunchy noodles – Packaged pudding
There are, no doubt, more to add to the list. But, remember – try to avoid hydrogenated oils altogether. Read labels carefully and you can find foods that you like that won’t cause an increase of inflammation in your body.
The good news? Many food manufacturers and fast-food chains have removed or reduced trans fat. But it still lurks in many foods.
Many restaurant chains have stopped frying food in hydrogenated oils, and recent research found that five in particular – McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Jack in the Box, and Dairy Queen – had significantly reduced trans-fat levels in french fries. Source…
